After several close encounters & video footage
of several bucks, I finally scored this Beautiful 8 point buck the second week of archery. I had rattled & called
this buck in on 3 different occassions to no avail, he just didn't seem to buy the calls yet. the rattle bag I was using
was also less intimidating to this buck as opposed my own set of heavy rattling antlers from a large buck I had
taken in the past. , I also had switched buck grunts I was using as my Primo's dominant buck grunt tube
which seemed to be too
intimidating to a tri call Primo's call w/ out tube which inculded
doe bleat, doe grunt, young buck grunt, dominate Buck grunt etc, doe in esteraus bleat, which seemed more believable to this
particular buck he weighed abt 175 lbs & was trully an amazing buck in my book & a good trophy in most hunters book.
I had several meetings with this buck & laid out doe in heat scent on all the trails I knew he Traveled
that were closest to the stands I used . Finally it was about 2:00 pm on Oct. 22 nd I had just put my cup I used
for coffee on my thermos . I was in my # 2 stand as I refer to it as it is on the side where there is a large acorn
ridge just adjacent to my stand where I had built a stand between the acorn & where I knew he traveled
from to get there.Anyway all of the sudden after not seeing this buck a couple of day's BAM there he was ,he came right
out of the swamp my stand was located about 35 yrds away from him w/ no direct shot opportunity at that spot, however he just
stood ther for which seemed forever I finally gave a very mild young buck grunt as he was pretty close to take a chance
like that however I caught him looking away from me just for a split second & I chanced the grunt call , well he seemed
to have bought it after several more min he started to walk along the edge he came out in & that direction was right where I
had just a couple hrs before laid a heavy doe in heat soaked pad & figured once he made it to that spot he would then
turn into the trail I laid which & that being right 20yrds straight in front of my stand where he would
be quartering away if he followed the trail til it ended, Well he got to the scent pad began lip curling & seemed cautious
for some unknown reason & decided instead of turning & following my scent trail he was going to go straight in direction
he was heading which led to a heavy scagg thicket, however as he did this he crossed the opening I used to enter the woods
from my cabin which was at 22 yrds & when he did I gave out a baat noise & he stopped dead in his tracks I at
that point I had been at full
draw & released what would be his Fatal
mistake & one of the best hunts I ever had been on to this day!!! I attribute patience & not trying to force this
buck to respond everytime I saw or didn't see him & I firmly believe this buck stayed in the area due to my lack
of human pressure. On my next page will take you on my various hunts during the shotgun opener so please feel free to come
